We are already bathed in ca 7 Hz electromagnetic radiation, and the brain's conductors (nerves) have awewome surface area as antennas. Also note the classic science fiction story of the fellow who writes software to autmatically generate music in counterpoint, inputs his real-time EEG as a lark, and then listens to the result...
MUSIC OF OUR SPHERE (C)1995 Alan M. Schwartz What is the origin of sentience? The anatomical complexity, interactive switching potential, and data storage capacity of the human brain is amply exceeded in volume and speed by either the American telephone system or the Internet. Integrated hard drive data storage exceeded the total of all human brains as early as 1986. Weight for weight, CD-ROM holds as much data as the greasy blob between your ears. Aside from implied managerial and administrative contradiction, why doesn't the phone company wake up? Why doesn't the Net self-discover that it is God? Digital processing and communication cooks at tens or hundreds of millions of cycles per second. Signals propagate through glass fiber at lightspeed (a foot/nanosecond) divided by refractive index (about 1.3-3). Signals travel through wire at lightspeed divided by the square root of the dielectric constant of the surrounding medium (about 2-7). Nerve impulses are not electromagnetic, they are electrochemical. The best signal transmission speeds of myelinated neurons are a million times slower than those of wire, coaxial cable, or fiber optics. Neural frequencies assayed by electroencephalography are not in the megahertz range. They are a million times slower: Name Range, Hz Correlation ================================================================ Delta 1- 3 sleep; neuro- and psychological disorder Theta 3- 8 sleep; neuro- and psychological disorder Alpha 8-13 relaxed brain Beta1 13-20 thought, stress, anxiety, senility Beta2 20-30 thought, stress, anxiety, senility The amount of information which can be encoded in a carrier is proportional to the carrier's frequency, giving the brain another million-fold disadvantage. The brain, other than the fact that it works, is not very impressive. We think, and our hardware does not, though it has combined processing and communication speeds a trillion-fold faster than our wetware, with massive storage capacity. Where is the magic? The Earth is spherical (off by 0.53%) and slathered with salt water and other conductive coatings. Calculate the resonance frequency of such a sphere - where it rings to electromagnetic energy like a tuning fork rings to sound - by dividing lightspeed (3x10^8 meters/sec) by the circumference of the Earth (40.03x10^6 meters) to get 7.5 Hz. The ionosphere and environs contain conductive plasma - free electrons plus atomic and molecular ions. It all reverberates with the music of our sphere. A physicist got his name appended, Schumann resonance, to that frequency band near 5-7 Hz. Consider the summed surface area of neuronal processes. It is an antenna! Does our hardware remain inanimate because it cannot partake of an eerie Gaian aura? The Earth resonates square in the midst of human neural frequencies, hard by the edge separating sleep and relaxed wakefulness. A smaller planet resonates at higher frequencies. The moon is too dry; it is an insulator. Mars, maybe with a little terraforming (and precipitated Environmentalist outrage), resonates at 14 Hz. Mars rings like an electromagnetic bell not at the human neural frequency line between sleep and wakefulness, but just over the border from full awareness to intense mental activity! What would be its effect upon several human generations bred and living in such an environment? Closer to home we have more proximate and more powerful concerns. The Department of Defense must communicate with its submarines in time of war. The penetration of radio waves into electrically conductive salt water is poor - the skin effect. Only very low frequencies diffuse to a useful depth. Thus we have Project Sanguine, a multi-megawatt (gigawatt?) Extremely Low Frequency antenna array stretched over hundreds of acres in Michigan, and elsewhere. How extremely low is this ELF? A couple of dozen hertz, or less! Does the DoD hold in readiness a device for scrambling human thought on a planetary scale? Will it operate in real time, or only over generations? How much have they been playing around, and at what power levels? (AWACS planes and their phased array radars are not physically large enough to radiate such low frequencies. They can emit a tight megawatt microwave beam to image even stealthy aircraft, and perhaps cook their contents in place. Cold War German ground radars facing Russia incinerated birds in mid-air.) Where coincidence exists in biology it is often because there is no coincidence at all. The octopus, squid, and cuttlefish are mollusks, which is as low in evolution as you can go and still have something consciously pursue you as dinner. Their eyes are as good as human eyes, and are anatomically similar despite another billion years of evolution refining our anatomy. The structure works. That our minds and our planet share an all- encompassing electromagnetic hum might be coincidence, or it might be so because it works. -- Uncle Al http://www.mazepath.com/uncleal/ http://www.ultra.net.au/~wisby/uncleal/ http://www.guyy.demon.co.uk/uncleal/ (Toxic URLs!
