- Swami Muktananda
The most ancient written publication of the planet is the Rig Veda about which certain recent estimates provide a date of compilition of around 3800BC. As might be gathered by other publications at this website in relation to the Vedanta, such as those by Sri Aurobindo, there is much evidence to suggest that the specifications of human consciousness have remained unchanged for a great many millennia and, moreover, these specifications were known to the ancient vedic sages of India. Through a human lineage which extends therefore back to these days of the Earth's planetary history, there has been the strongly maintained tradition which bounds the passing down of knowledge from the Guru to the student.
Such tradition is rarely appreciated in the western community with its indigenous roots widely hypothesised to stem from the revitalisation of the ancient and classical Greek observations concerning the world during the last half of the second millennia BC. However there is growing evidence to suggest that this hypothesis may have to one day give way to acceptance of the existence of a much earlier classical civilisation of the eastern hemisphere which gave rise to the Vedanta and subsequent writings, and which ,through the individual pursuit of knowledge of the ancient world, bold travellers brought back to the west, in a somewhat piecemeal manner, fragments of the eastern knowledge.
Yet - irrespective of the ultimate "truth of history" - there is a most important item of understanding which is often swept aside in the earnest philosophic discussions and the evolving scientific theorising concerning the nature of the world in which we are, to use the words of Prigogine, embedded. In terms of Western religious understanding, specifically Christianity, this important item of understanding is referenced as the foundational activity of advice - (to soften the concept of commandment) - provided in another article at this site entitled A Summary of the Entire Bible in a few short words by the man of whom it speaks.
Love is such a simple word, yet of all words, it is probably the least understood and potentially the most rewarding to understand and to nourish in the environment about one's own being in this world in which we take our place. It is hoped that following extract from Muktananda's work, Play of Consciousness, being the presentation of Chapter 5 - The Path of Love, will provide a great depth of contemplative inspiration to such students of life who read it.
