Heart's Role in Consciousness |

An interesting book was just published called "The Heart's Code" by Dr. Paul Pearsall, a psychoneuroimmunologist and writer who's worked for over 20 years with heart transplant patients. It seems to be very normal for heart transplant recipients to experience changes in their personality, at least in their food cravings, at most in having "memories" intrude on their consciousness after the transplant. Dr. Pearsall's research seems to point to the influence of the donor of the heart: where it is possible to check with the donor's family or the donor themselves (in the cases of heart/lung transplants where A gets a new heart and lungs and donates his heart to B), the personality changes, the food cravings, the unusual "catchphrases" the recipients pick up or the memories are verified to have come from the donor. A type "A" personality can become a type B overnight or vice-versa, or a sullen, depressed person can all of a sudden perk up and be inexplicably cheerful as if it were their natural personality. Sexual tastes and desires change, too: a middle-aged woman of normal libido got a heart from a young prostitute and became a sex and porn maniac. Most disturbing was the case of the 8 year old girl who received the heart from a murdered 10-year old girl and started having vivid dreams about being murdered. The psychiatrist who was working with her referred her to the police and from the evidence she "remembered" they caught the murderer. Whatever else there is in the book about "Heart Energy" and so on, I agree that the evidence of the influence the heart has on the personality, the self, and consciousness has never been addressed, in the West, anyway. I quote the author: "Don't bite off my finger, look where I'm pointing." The evidence points, at the very least, to an overlooked contributor to consciousness. Peter Farrell
